Urinary Frequency/Urgency
The most common cause of a sudden increase frequency of voiding or a severe urge to void is a Urinary tract infection (also called Bladder or Kidney infection). Urinary tract infections need to be treated fairly quickly (1 to 3 days) or they can make you very sick. Some women experience frequency as a chronic problem called Overactive Bladder. In severe cases women may have to void 60 times per day or have to get up 4 to 6 times every night. Don’t be embarrassed to discuss this problem. If your bladder is running your life then schedule an appointment for evaluation. There are dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and medications that might dramatically improve your life. In addition, there is an exciting new therapy called Interstim that is similar to a pace maker for the heart----except it works for the bladder. Urgency and Urge Incontinence is the very uncomfortable need to empty the bladder which at times may also cause leakage. This is a more complex bladder problem that needs to be evaluated in detail. This may represent and exaggerated for of Urinary frequency but it can also be a symptom of Interstitial Cystitis. Interstitial Cystitis is a chronic inflammation of the bladder wall.
